I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You
When I listen too much to Marc Anthony or Enrique Inglesias, I start getting ads in Spanish…not that I frequently do that, especially since my Spanish is pretty bad these days…anyhow, YouTube kept suggesting this song for me, so I sang it.
Kill Bill Disco
I actually had trouble understanding the character arc of Beatrix Kiddo, but then I learned that sometimes grief comes when you have to move on with your life after a long chapter, and really understood the metaphor portrayed in Kill Bill.
Take 2 of Dancing Intimacy: Roxanne
When you pay for intimacy, it is not recommended to fall in love as a client. At least, I think that’s what The Police here is cautioning in the original. Of course, I chose to sing the Moulin Rouge version, which is more about jealousy…but whatever. Besides you get my broken Spanish as a bonus.
Pair Dancing Is Intimacy (Take 1)
Engaging in conflict can be a dance and something you would only do if you consent to the intimacy required of you. Anyway, this song is not so serious…and also I’ve seen Rent a few times. The opening song, which feels more appropriate about everything being too expensive at this time, is a little too hard for a single person to perform, but this one is more manageable. Also I don’t know that every bisexual will be so flirtatious…
Uninvited
This is a tribute to how much I grew up with the trope of “falling in love” in films and how it all makes us want to lose our minds over passion that we may or may not have chosen. Also, I am uploading this without checking what the content is actually like…
Wake Up
I can manage singing songs from Alanis better than some songs that I get way pitch-y over…this one is Wake Up.
Zombie
We have made death such a spectacle that this song seems pretty much about going along with it.
Part Of That World
In elementary school, there was a physical education teacher who would sing songs from the Little Mermaid. Here’s my turn.
On the Radio
Since the Olympics, slowly I’ve become quite fixated on the age of Donna Summer disco…I know this is not part of the suite of MacArthur Park, but it was one of the songs I found on KTU back in the day.
Third Eye Blind's Wounded
Thinking about all the gendered harm and neglect that is happening, and acknowledging it with this song.
Wild Horses
This rendition of Wild Horses is based on the version of Wild Horses Alicia Keys and Adam Levine performed live in Brooklyn 2005. This is to acknowledge the year of the Fire Horse.
Tomorrow Never Dies
I’ve decided to pick the song for THE Bond movie that is most appropriate as an Asian American. Tomorrow Never Dies featured Michelle Yeoh in 1997. This was when representation still mattered and Vietnam was not really a place where most American tourists would even consider visiting.
Fools Rush In
Who knows whether or not Crazy Rich Asians will get a film sequel? But Fools Rush In was the song they used for the wedding… and this is my take on it. (Also, I think I prefer posting every other week for now.)
You Oughta Know
Another song of the 90s. I think this is the one Alanis is probably most known for. The first time I heard her whole album my neighbors were over to celebrate my birthday and brought the CD. I was asked if profanity was okay. Considering I have a Pisces sun and Leo moon, I very easily accept emotional expression. It’s also a different emotion that is a part of grief – not the sad and bargaining type like in the Boyz II Men song.
